German conductor David Niemann is establishing himself as one of the most gifted conductors of his generation. Second prize winner of the 2015 Malko Conducting Competition, in February 2015 he was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, where he worked alongside chief conductor Michael SchÞnwandt for the following three seasons. He is developing a broad mainstream repertoire and is equally a persuasive advocate of twentieth-century and contemporary repertoire.

Highlights of the 2023/24 season will include returning to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to conduct the finals of the Scottish International Piano Competition, a full staging of the Mozart Requiem at Malmo Opera, with dancers from the Skanes Dansteater and choreography by choreography by Örjan Andersson, a revival of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Der herzlose Riese with Luxembourg Philharmonic and a regional tour with Orchestre de Picardie. The season will also see debuts with Filharmonica Banatul Timisoara and WĂŒrttembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, as well as a return to Kammerakademie Potsdam.

Recent highlights have included successful debuts with Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Kammerakademie Potsdam, Aalborg Symfoniorkester, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre National de Belgique and Ensemble Modern (Hamburg Elbphilharmonie); the world premiere of world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s new opera Der herzlose Riese with Luxembourg Philharmonic; a special interdisciplinary project with Junge Deutsche Philharmonie featuring new commissions with the most renowned artists of the German-speaking poetry slam scene; Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw, paired with Beethoven’s Choral Symphony, to open the Barcelona concert season of the Valles Symphony in the iconic Palau de la Musica. Engagements have also included a series of projects with Qatar Philharmonic, a number of visits to Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Luxembourg Philharmonic; many main season and regional concerts with the OpĂ©ra Orchestre National Montpellier and concerts with OpĂ©ra National de Lorraine and Orchestre Lyrique RĂ©gion Avignon Provence.

Earlier seasons featured Residentie Orkest, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestre National de Lille, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester and Hamburger Symphoniker. His many projects for OpĂ©ra Orchestre National Montpellier included notable staged productions of Schumann’s Manfred, a double bill of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilĂšges and Szymon Laks’ L’Hirondelle inattendue and La BoĂźte Ă  joujoux – Debussy’s ballet for children. While in Montpellier he conducted many orchestral programmes featuring core symphonic repertoire such as Dvorak Symphony No. 9, Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven.

In 2013 he assisted Emmanuel Krivine in a production of Schumann’s Manfred at the OpĂ©ra Comique (Paris). While still a student he conducted CosĂŹ fan tutte and Die Fledermaus at the Academy of Music, Leipzig, and Christian Jost’s The Arabian Night at the Hochschule fĂŒr Musik und Theater Hamburg.

Initially a passionate violinist, David commenced his conducting studies in 2007 as a pre-student at the Folkwang University of his hometown of Essen with David de Villiers and continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Leif Segerstam, at the Dutch National Masters of Conducting programme with Ed Spanjaard and Jac van Steen, in addition to the Hochschule fĂŒr Musik und Theater Hamburg with Ulrich Windfuhr and holds a Master’s degree from those last two institutions.

Soprano Julieth Lozano Rolong

Award winning Colombian soprano Julieth Lozano Rolong wowed audiences worldwide scooping the coveted Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Audience Prize at the 2023 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and was recently named as one of Opera Wire’s 2023 Top Ten Rising Stars.

This season, Julieth returned to Welsh National Opera to revisit the role of Nuria in Ainadamar. She made her debut with the company at the delayed Dubai Expo 2020 in the new production of Al Wasl as Zayed/Young Mary under the direction of Sir David Pountney and baton of Justin Brown. Also, this season, she will make her English National Opera debut as Jano in Jenufa.

Julieth’s 2022/23 season commenced in her native Colombia as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro at Teatro Mayor under the baton of Martin Haselböck. Following this, Julieth returned to the UK to make her debut at Scottish Opera in a new production of Ainadamar as Nuria under the baton of Stuart Stratford, before spending the rest of the season at Grand ThĂ©Ăątre GenĂšve as part of their Jeune ensemble. Roles there will include BlumenmĂ€dchen in Parsifal, Melanto in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria, La Doctoresse in Voyage vers l’espoir and Aksinia in Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk.

Previous engagements include Vixen (The Cunning Little Vixen) for Longborough Festival Opera, Zerlina (Don Giovanni) at the Verbier Festival, Tytania (Midsummer Night’s Dream) for Opera al Parque, Colombia, Despina (Cosi Fan Tutte) at the International Music Festival at Cartagena, Colombia, Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) at RCM and Norina (Don Pasquale) for Random Opera.

A 2020 Kathleen Ferrier competition finalist, and 2018 recipient of the President’s award given by The Prince of Wales, Julieth appeared in the BBC documentary Queen Victoria: My Musical Britain recorded in 2019 at Buckingham and Kensington palaces. In 2016 she participated in Georg Solti’s Academy and Verbier Festival’s Project Opera, where she was awarded the Prix Thierry Mermod. She has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, V&A Museum and many other venues around the globe.

Julieth graduated with a Masters in Vocal Performance and an Artist Diploma in Opera from the Royal College of Music, under the tutelage of Dinah Harris. An Irene Hanson and Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells scholar, Julieth was a 2019/20 Young Artist at the National Opera Studio in London.

Linda Watson is an American dramatic soprano. She made her career based in Germany where she began as a mezzo-soprano at the Theater Aachen. She has performed worldwide, including at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and the Bayreuth Festival. She focused on dramatic roles by Wagner and Strauss, as well as Turandot. She was awarded the title Kammersängerin in Germany in 2004 and in Austria in 2020. Watson began her stage career as a mezzo-soprano at the Theater Aachen in 1992, followed by an engagement at the Aalto Theatre in Essen in 1995, combined with a guest contract at the Leipzig Opera, where she performed Wagnerian roles such as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde and Venus in Tannhäuser. She became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 1997. The same year, she first appeared as Venus at the Vienna State Opera, and a year later as Kundry in Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival, conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli. From 2000 to 2005, she portrayed Ortrud in Lohengrin at Bayreuth.

From 2006 to 2010, she sang all three Brünnhilde roles in Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival, and also performed these roles in the new production at the Vienna State Opera, earning a solo Grammy Nomination. She subsequently appeared as Brünnhilde at many of the world’s great opera houses, including at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, even in a nine-hour compilation of all the Ring in one day. She added more dramatic roles to her repertoire, including Isolde, Elektra, and both the Dyer’s Wife and the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten. The credibility of her portrayals and her vocal bravura led to engagements worldwide, in Munich, Berlin, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona, at La Scala in Milan, Florence, Bologna, Amsterdam, Los Angeles and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She has worked with a conductors including Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Daniel Barenboim, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Antonio Pappano, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Philippe Jordan, Ricardo Chailly, Axel Kober and Christian Thielemann. In 2013 and 2014, the singer returned to the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein to perform as Isolde, Marschallin, Elektra, Ariadne and Brünnhilde. At the Vienna State Opera, she was appointed Kammersängerin in January 2020. At La Scala in Milan, Linda Watson could be seen and heard in the 2020/21and 22/23 season as Herodias in Salome. In June of 2023 she sang the Amme in the San Francisco premiere of Hockney’s Frau Ohne Schatten under Donald Runnicles.

In addition, Linda Watson is a professor of voice at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, and performs master classes worldwide.

Conductor Laureate Neeme JĂ€rvi

The head of a musical dynasty, Neeme JĂ€rvi is one of today’s most respected maestros. He conducts many of the world’s most prominent orchestras and works alongside soloists of the highest calibre. A prolific recording artist, he has amassed a discography of over 450 recordings.

Over his long and highly successful career he has held positions with orchestras across the world. He is currently Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest, Artistic Director of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and Conductor Laureate and Artistic Advisor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He became Artistic Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in January 2011. He also holds the titles of Music Director Emeritus of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor Emeritus of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Recent and future seasons include engagements with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Wiener Symphoniker, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra among others in the USA. This season he continues his regular relationships with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (for the start of a Tchaikovsky ballet cycle project) and the RSNO (for a number of continued recording and concert projects). He looks forward a return to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for an exciting project culminating in a concert to celebrate his 75th birthday. He will also make appearances with the Orquesta Nacional de España and the London Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestras. Soloist collaborations include Janine Jansen, Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Vadim Repin, Evgeny Kissin, Lang Lang, Yefim Bronfman, Truls MĂžrk and Frank-Peter Zimmermann.

Highlights of an impressive discography include critically acclaimed complete symphony cycles of Prokofiev, Sibelius, Nielsen and Brahms. Neeme JÀrvi has also championed less widely known composers such as Wilhelm Stenhammar, Hugo Alfvén and Niels Gade, and composers from his native Estonia including Rudolf Tobias, Eduard Tubin and Arvo PÀrt. He has recorded with Chandos, Deutsche Grammophon, BIS and EMI amongst others.

JĂ€rvi’s most recent discs with Chandos are a Wagner/de Vlieger series with the RSNO, a recording of Mahler Symphony No7 with the Residentie Orkest (which was awarded the International Record Prize ‘Toblacher KomponierhĂ€uschen’), and a series of Johan Halvorsen’s orchestral works with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

Throughout his career, Neeme JĂ€rvi has been honoured with many international awards and accolades. In Estonia these include an honorary doctorate from the Music Academy of Estonia in Tallinn, and the Order of the National Coat of Arms from the President of the Republic of Estonia, Mr Lennart Meri. The Mayor of Tallinn presented Maestro JĂ€rvi with the city’s first-ever ceremonial sash and coat of arms insignia, and he has been named one of the ‘Estonians of the Century’. Neeme JĂ€rvi holds an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Detroit’s Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, as well as honorary doctorates from the University of Aberdeen and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He has also received the Commander of the North Star Order from King Karl Gustav XVI of Sweden.
